TRX400EX smoking on start up FIX

My 02 TRX400(440)EX started smoking really bad on start-up but would clear up once warm and ran great. Valve stem seals...right? Replaced them with kibble white seals and....NO change at all, still smoked like crazy on start-up. I drained the sump for 20min and just a few ounces came out. Poured the oil back into the oil tank, started it up and NO SMOKE in the last 6 months. My theory: Somehow a little oil had collected in the dry sump and the crank was splashing oil up on the bottom of the piston and cylinder walls.
