CR125R Need help to identify the correct year but the frame number looks odd

Recommended Posts

Bought the bike 3 years ago just to ride around the woods and time has come for a new piston, but the frame number looks odd and I can’t year it properly to get the right piston kit. To me it’s a 2007 but was told it’s a 2002. HELP

Any numbers or coding on the cylinder head/cases?

That altered VIN / re-stamped digits would be considered fraud in most places, you can unfortunately suspect it's a stolen bike.

Also, don't order a piston & ring until you've disassembled and inspected/measured the cylinder.

I’ve had the bike since 2016 (just looked at an instagram post). Never looked at the vin when I bought it.  The cylinder needs to be bored and plated cos of the piston damage so I’m going for the biggest piston I can get for a bit more poke. So will be having a full build due to the piston bits locking up the crank. The piston had done way to many hours flat out.

Perhaps first contact the cylinder replater shop to ask their opinion on what is the biggest size you can use.

Keep in mind the powervalves may have to be clearanced to fit.

Searching various engine component part numbers that change depending on model years/designs,

the KZ4 below the chassis' serial number suggest it's a 1998-1999

Also, if you read the serial number from back to front

since it normally has 17 digits, the 10th digit (meaning the 8th from the end) indicating the year is a 9, likely meaning 1999.

Seems like the engine serial plate has been taken off. 🙈.  Now it seems like I did buy a nicked bike. Don’t really know where to go from here with identification year tho. Will just have to buy and see what fits.

You have at least three clues suggesting it's a 1999, I'd go with that.

KZ4 on chassis

KZ4 on the cylinder head

a 9 as the 10th VIN digit

Cheer lads. I’ll go with that then. I was looking to road reg her but that frame number looks like it’s gonna cause me shit. So I’ll let her for the dirt. 👍🏻

The motor might be 1999, but everything else is 2002 or later.  2002-2004 was the same.  2005-2007 was the same.  2002-2007 all used all the same plastic.  Front fender, shrouds and side number plates are the giveaway.  Here's a 1999 and a 2002 side-by-side....  If the motor checks out for 1999, it's definitely been swapped.

Equally important is to remember that you just posted the re-stamped engine # on a public forum and may wind up having to return it to the OO

Probably not during these uncertain times.
