XR countershaft oil seal

Recommended Posts

This is for a 81 XR500r but notice the XR250r uses the exact same seal. I was able to pull the old one out but then noticed on here that the correct way to put one back in is to split the cases. I also noticed some talk about trimming off some part of the seal so you could drive it in from the outside with Loctite 609 on it to keep it in place. The guy also mentioned making a metal retainer in addition. I'd like to attempt this fix as I don't think it worthy of the full case split. My question is, what part of the seal do you trim off? I'm guessing it's the little bump / ring that runs around the outside. Any advice appreciated, thanks!

Yes, it is able to be done, but it is not a great fix. If it does pop out while riding it will destroy the engine.

If you push it in a mm too far it will destroy the countershaft.
