XR650R Rear Shock Preload Adjuster

Recommended Posts

Hi there,

Recently bought an plated XR650R, loaded it up with camping gear and realized I should probably adjust preload for stability, went to do that and found the preload adjustment rings unwilling to move. I have the right tools, kroil, time, spanners, mallets, hammers, patience, etc, just will not break free. I've decided against my better judgement to buy a new (used) OEM shock, this way I can ship the the old one off to be rebuilt.

So, now I'm wondering if anyone knows of a good aftermarket preload adjuster to replace the rings so that this doesn't happen again. Since I'll be using this with and without about 50lb-70lb of gear I'd like to be able to adjust on the fly without tearing the bike down. I hear some people say I can just turn the spring and it'll turn the rings, this might work with the new (used) shock but this was not at all possible with my current equipment, the spring isn't pressing up against the rings hard enough and the rings are basically bonded to the shock.

I'm looking for something like this that'll work with the OEM shock, if that's an option, and if there isn't such a device what is the best way to deal with my situation?

Thanks in advance, I appreciate your time!

I have a couple of hydraulic preload adjusters kicking around off '80s road bikes that fit other shocks, just put it between your lock rings and the spring. Go to a dismantler that does older stuff and have a look (I can't remember exactly what they're off). Actually if you google it there are a few aftermarket options too.
