1978 XL 250S - Longer Rear Shocks?

Recommended Posts

The stock length is 400mm. Can I get something longer to help raise the rear height a little bit? Would this cause drivetrain alignment issues, or alter the handling dramatically?

Try some progressive suspension XR shocks. You'll have to check fitment, but I think they were the same fittings. Pretty sure they are a bit longer. https://www.progressivesuspension.com/product/1486/13-series-dampers

Or, back in the day there were a few aftermarket swingarms around (for XRs again) that moved the shocks forward a bit to give more travel. Maybe try to track one down.

You could try to adapt a cr/rm/pe/kx etc arm or something from that era (I know a guy that has an extruded KDX420 one adapted and adapted for twin shocks), how serious are you?

Again fairly sure those things had fairly lazy rake/trail measurements, and no real issues with the chain so lifting the rear an inch or 2 should be fine.
