XR ODO acting up

2001 XR 250R.  I snapped my odo cable and replaced it.  Since then the odometer has been an off/on thing.  Usually it barely moves but the other day while riding down a road it started working great and was keeping correct mileage with my gps.  Then I went and re-set the odo to zero and it started working slowly again.  I've made sure the knob/wheel was pushed in correctly.  Is this a common problem with these bikes? Do I have a odometer problem or something else?
