1997 xr250r rattling engine

Recommended Posts

I just bought a 97 xr250r. It had a slight rattle at the top end of the engine so I adjusted the valves setting the exhaust to .003” and intake to .002”. It still has the rattle in the top end after the adjustment. I did make sure I was at tdc with the manual decomp not pushing on the rocker arm. I messed up the first time so I know what it sounds like when you don’t. Just wondering if this slight rattle is normal in the xr250’s. I still have the baffle in the muffler and you can hardly hear it when the engine is cold. It isn’t that noticeable when riding it, just when it is warm and at an idle.

Ticking from the valve train is normal when the clearances are set properly. But you should post a video of the noise you're hearing so others can hear if you've got something else going on.

Rattling is usually a sign of a loose timing chain. Another sign is the rattle gets louder after warmup.  I would start there.
