Or a Two-wheeler like this one, with a California plate and a pristine NOS Honda option Speedo/odo/trip meter, etc.?

Depends on where you want to be able to go and how you want to do it?  And...?

Yep, living in California all my life, I really appreciate a license-plated dirt-capable bike to connect gnarly trails by way of plate-requiring roads.  And from what I know, the DMV here since January 1. 2004 is no longer accepting a dirt bike conversion to licensed-status WITHOUT THREAT OF LATER REVOCATION--EVEN IF YOU MANAGE TO SNEAK IT BY THEM FOR AWHILE.  So, basically, they ain't making any more of this vanishing species and the ones converted before that cut-off date are grandfathered in BASED ON THE FRAME NUMBER!
