How to successfully remove a staked base valve nut?

Do any of you have any successful methods for undoing the stake on a base valve or mid valve thread and still keeping full functionality of the assembly? I'm concerned about destructive disassembly practices and not being able to get parts!

2014 500 EXC, btw...

they normally come apart ok then i just run a tap over them and they're good as new, short of that fie them flat if you don't have a lathe...

I've seen lots of versions of this, and it's been fine, but this is the most severe stake I've seen and I can't really afford to get it wrong. The midvalve tap is staked the same.

Take a small file and clean any excess flare off the stake before removing the nut so the threads inside the nut don’t get damaged.

Then use a file, I do a few sets of these a week and never had a problem but there is a first time for everything.

Use a file/grinder and then a thread-restoring file to clean up the threads.

They are called jewelers files

0.50? Oh...it's a KTM.

One of the universal thread tools may work (two examples below) but you're probably better off doing it the old-fashioned way (e.g., file by hand).

Mate i just brought the die nut and tap and run the nut on every thread and it works a treat and looks professional.

It was special order for me in Australia but id say it wont be a problem in the USA.

First MV nut came off really nice after flat filing the sides of the stake. No idea if I'll get as lucky on all four stakes.

Does everyone use blue loctite on these threads? I always have but just wondered if there was a chemical reason not to...

You can use blue locktite. You can also do the same to the tip of the stake and mushroom it out just enough to make sure the nut stays on.

I really figured these were going to be a pain. For anyone being careful, they aren't. I just flat filed the expanded section a little at the ends of the slot made by the punch.

That’s what I was basically saying. And no need to repair any threads. It’s nothing big. And it’s easy to repeat when you put it back together. Plus red thread lock.
