Sproket changing--front vs. rear

Recommended Posts

Question for those that might know. I have been riding a 4:1 ratio to get my confidence up for more speed. I am ready to change. Question is if it is better to make the front or rear sprocket larger and second question is whether you can feel a difference between going bigger on the front vs. the rear?

I am no engineer, but I was curious if the transmission ratio is altered when you change the front or rear sprocket sizes? Maybe I am thinking too much?

thanks, tom

Tippsalot - LOL, I love the name!!! Don't know what kind of riding you're doing, but I bought my "S" with it changed to 14/44 (even though my buddy suggested 13/47) I thought I'd be riding 50/50, but turns out I'm riding about 20% street and 80% trail. I switched to a 14/47, and then just last week switched to 13/47  I won't be changing this combo!!!

Like that "tippsalot"? Nickname from Steve Hatch. I guess I earned it.

I am going to experiment with the 13 and 14 tooth since the rear is a 48. I think I'll like the 13 best. Thanks for the reply!
