VIN number / year of manufacture

Recommended Posts

Does the VIN number contain an identification of what year the bike was made? If so what part of the number and what are the codes?

Man have I become a recent expert at that..........lol

Long story.......

The VIN is a 17 digit alphanumeric code. The 10th character represents the model year.In the 90's through 2000, the year was designated by letters. Starting on 2001, numbers were used. "1" for a 2001 model, "2" for an 02 and so on. The letters and numbers in the vin all mean something. Type of bike, place of origin, stroke, cylinders, displacement, etc. I believe the last 6 represent the bikes actual production number.

The first 3 on my Yamaha look like JYA = "J"apan "Y"amaha "A" motorcycle.

My Suzuki looks like JS1 = "J"apan "S"uzuki "1" motorcycle.

In both cases the 10th digit represents the year model. Hope this helps.
