Best way to straighten a bent rim?

Recommended Posts

I have four spots on my front rim that I want to get straight before I put my new tire on. In the past, I would beat them back with a rubber mallet. I want to try something a less caveman this time. I was trying to figure a way to use a C-clamp as a press, anyone try this before?

I have used a large crecent wrench to help "straighten" the outer edge of the rim. Now this only works if just the outer edge is bent either in or out a little. If the rim is bent to the center (where the spokes attach) this won't work. If the wheel is really out of whack it may need to be replaced (just the rim that is).

Thanks for the tip! I have a monster Crescent wrench that I can use for the job.

Lorne,

Another way is to put the wheel in a bench vise.

Take a bolt that fits perfectly inside the rim in a straight spot, then put the rim in the vise. Pinch the rim down until it is width of the bolt.

Prevents ya from going too far the other way.

Good luck, punk!
