CRF fork outer oil change

Recommended Posts

I used the search and most posts got off track and started talking about oil.

I just want to make sure that i am changing the oil correctly. On my 2002 crf450.

Here is what i did.

1.Pulled Forks

2.loosened fork caps

3 turned upside down and drained into a pan for 8 hours(@ work)

4.refilled to 395cc

Now here is my question. About how much oil stays in? I checked my manual and it states 3.7cc for my temp and time draining. But when i measured the oil that came out it only measure to 300cc. I just had my forks done by Race Tech and on the setup sheet it says the level was set at 396cc.

So what did i do wrong?

Maybe monkeyboy at Racetech only put 300cc in instead of 400cc?

I can tell ya this for sure, if you put 395 back it'll be quite a bit firmer.

Unless they count the inner chamber oil too, which would be completely incorrect

Could be seemed like alot of oil to be missing

I wanted to check it since it bottomed hard off a small flat landing jump.

So Is it safe to assume i didn't miss anything and my oil really was THAT low

My 02 I have 49kg springs vs 47kg standard I run 400cc's of fluid each leg and mine are plush.

I was going to mention that. I believe heavier springs actually take up more volume (thicker coils)... no??

So anyone know of a friendly cheat sheet???

Ya, Id say you were safe in not missing anything. And it would explain why it bottomed so hard too....

I bet it was plush over tiny stuff though...

I run 400cc with .49 springs too...but Ive got a subtank set up too, mines really plush... :D
