How the heck. . .

Recommended Posts

Do you use a manual micrometer? I bought one yesterday thinking I could measure some shims, but &%$#@!?! NO directions, NO clue, nothing! I understand there's .025" measurement on the barrel, and .001" on the barrel, but my math skills are highly lacking right now! Any advice?

I have one... it's in metric, but fairly self explanatory. What exactly would you like to know?

Mine came with no directions. Just a few words on the package that said "Each number on the barrel equals 1.00", each mark in between equals .025" and each mark on the thimble equals ".0001. Take the number off the barrel and add to the thimble to get your measurement." &%$#@!? I tried adding them up and they're no where near the number I get on the shim (i.e. 1.78, 2.02, etc.)

The #'s for the shim are metric, sounds like you have an " micrometer.

Here's the shim sheet so you can convert to .001.

Thank Ride_Red for it.

Actually I have a shim with the numbers worn off, so I bought a micrometer to size it up. I'll see what I can do with the spec sheet. Thanks guys!

Also remember the conversion from MM to Inch is.

MM / 25.4 = inch

Ex.

1mm / 25.4 = .03937"

Also if your having problems reading the barrel on a micrometer I could teach you with a few pictures.

Please do! I was looking online last night trying to "learn" how to read the darn thing. Like I said my micrometer is from Sear's and has a row of numbers (1.00) on the barrel, and a vertical row of numbers (.001) on the thimble. Maybe you can walk me through how to measure, record and then convert. Would you believe I have a master's degree?!

Don't feel bad I work with numbers all day and threw mine out and replaced it with a digital one. The first time I used it I thought I had it figured out, did my measurments and ordered my shims. They all came in way to thick so my neighbor lent me his digi and I trashed a brand new only used once device for a digi.

Thanks a bunch! How do I zero my mic? I see you can spin the barrel off completely and there's a little tensioner nut of some sort on the shaft. There's also some kind of adjuster on the ratchet end as well.

Turn it all the way in but don't force it, it should go to zero. That's what the ratchet is for if you don't have a feel for it.

To properly calibrate it you need to use a gage block but I know you don't have any.

Just see if it zero's out when you turn it in.
