13.5 compression. Too tight?

Recommended Posts

Is this too much compression for the DRZ motor, as in will it be happy and reliable. Bike is 400s used for recreation. Im looking for a bit more pop.

I was going to do the base gasket swap on my 400s and figured if I can throw in a 13.5 piston and run on that, why not.

Im using hotcam intake, S exhaust and I want to use 91 pump gas.

stock CR S 11.3

Stock CR E 12.2

adding the 13.5 piston to an onotherwise stock S (s base gasket) only gets you 12.6 CR... not worth the change of a piston.

If that is all your after, change the base gasket (top end gasket set from TT store is $21) toss in a new set of rings and your at 12.2 CR.. Close enough to the 12.6 the piston and gaskest set would get ya, at much less cost.

EDIT: ok,, I may have miss read some of your last post.....

Your saying you are adding an E base gasket.. Yes? if so,, then yes with the 13.5 piston you'll have full 13.5 CR,, and no, that will not run on pump gas,, or did not in mine. If you swap to a Hot Cam at some point later,, you will also run in to somewhat harder starting due to the high CR and no Auto Decomp of the HC EX cam.
