Burning smell from tranny oil

Recommended Posts

I am having problems with grey oil. I tried to figure out if it was a leaking oil or water seal, but the weep hole shows no signs of that. I was wondering if it was the bypass pipe or seal, but have not taken it apart yet. I also thought it might be caused by a lot of water riding. Last night I noticed it had a bit of a burnt smell to the oil. The engine oil is fine the radiator fluid seems to stay constant or at least I have not needed to fill it. Any ideas on anything I just said? If anyone has had this problem and has a fix I would really appreciate it.

Surf,

A burnt smell from used tranny oil is normal. It's just a sign it's time to change it. I get it quite often, and I'm religious with oil changes. The more you use the clutch, the more it will smell, too.

Now, if you say the tranny oil is coming out milky looking, that a whole other thing. That sounds like a waterpump seal. You may be getting just enough rad. fluid in there to color the oil.
