Odd Shim Sizes…

Recommended Posts

According to the manual, it appears that the valve shims only come in sizes of increments of 5 (eg: 170 175 180 185….).

When I removed my intake shims for inspection on my 2003 YZ250F, they are clearly marked 189 186 188. A search of TT failed to indicate that anyone else mentioned an odd size like mine. All the threads I found referred to increments of 5.

Is this normal for factory shims to be odd sizes like mine?

Those shims are the factory shims. Those are the only ones you'll see that aren't rounded out to 5's or 10's. they are for precise clearance spec.s when the engine is first assembled. If you go to your nearest motorcycle repair shop you can probably get some used factory shims if you really want to dial it in.

That's what I assumed, but I wonder why I never saw others mention the odd sizes on TT. They always mentioned pulling out the standard sizes. Possibly those bikes had been previously adjusted before.

Thanks!
