Zero valve clearance!

Recommended Posts

Just pulled my 02 crf450 apart to check the valves. All the valves were tight, one had no clearance. What now? I bought the bike used 3 months ago, this is the first time I have checked them. I was planning on pulling the thing apart over the winter and putting in an 04 piston, etc. Do I have to do that now, or can I just put in a thinner shim and get by for the next month?

Do it all now. You won't regret it! you might even consider the Honda 450 ATV valves. (I know it's hard to imagine using ATV parts on your bike, but...) I have heard from some people and dealers that they are a great solution. I also heard that White Brothers? are beginning to manufacture SS valves for the 450? The old KibbleWhites are in my bike and have worked perfect for a year now.

I decided to just shim it and see if I can make it till winter. I had to go 12 thou thinner on the shim to get the valve within spec clearance. Bike seems to run fine, but for how long?
