Opinion Poll: Magnetic Drain Plugs or Oil Filter?

Recommended Posts

Magnetic plugs will only catch iron or regular steel particles. They won't stop aluminum, copper, brass, general dirt based particles, stray gasket material/sealer, pieces of plastic gear or cam chain guides . An oil filter will stop all of the above. The filter should be your primary protection.

Magnetic plugs are nice cause you can see the debris without the messy job of cutting an oil filter open for inspection.

Are we talking about a magnetic drain plug for a CRF 450? I didn't think you could use one because of the unique thread configuration inside the engine. Every magnetic plug I've ever seen the magnet was on the end of the bolt. Anyone who has opened up a CRF engine knows that this would do you no good for capturing floating particles.
