D.I.Y. Stator Rewinding (aka. Lighting Coil)

Recommended Posts

:excuseme:Could anyone explain what exactly to buy and how to rewind a stator (lighting coil) on your own? Eg. what kind of wire (coated/uncoated), how much, where do you buy it, what kind of sealant, etc...

I (along with many other people, I'm sure) hope someone who has successfully accomplished DO-IT-YOURSELF stator rewinding might share how it is done.

At the very least, does anyone know where to find detailed instructions on how to rewind an XR650R stator on your own?

Any help is much appreciated, so :worthy:THANK YOU  in advance...

Look pretty basic. I'm going to have a go wih my XR400 stator. I'm running a marginally legal DS setup off the stock stator/no battery. more power would rule. BUT - is there any disadvantage to boosting power?? If not, why don't the manufacturers just make them that way in the begining??

Honda650R,

I would take a long look on GOOGLE for stator rewinding. In the last couple years, I have seen a couple good write-ups on adding or re-wiring your stator. Maybe it was on the electrex site?

Anyway, give it a try. It is not rocket science, you just need common sense and some soldering skills.

Check out the XR650 Yahoo Group. There is a good section on different methods of rewinding. Just adding more windings in series to the stock coil is definitely not the best method.

And as much as your fingers will hurt when you get done you wont want to do it twice.
