51 tooth sprocket; Chain length?

Recommended Posts

Greetings:

I just bought a 2003 DR-Z 250 yesterday. It's pretty awesome. I'll post more comments on that later. But one thing that leaps out to me is that it's geared too high. I ride in a lot of tight woods trails, and it's geared too high to use second, and too low for first.

I've read that the hot ticket is a 51-tooth rear sprocket. I'm going to do this ASAP. But two questions:

1) Is the stock chain long enough, or must I replace the chain right away too?

2) My dealer says Moose is the only source for a 51-tooth rear sprocket. Do I have any other choices?

Any thoughts would be welcome.

Thanks much,

Michael Burr

You can use DR-Z400 rear sprockets on a DR-Z250. I bought a Renthal. Add one chain link for every 2 teeth you go up in size on the rear sprocket. Remember, however, that you can only go up 2 links at a time in chain length. (Chains must have an even number of links.)

Dear Dr. DRZ:

Thanks for the helpful information! I appreciate it very much -- and so will my DRZ!

Best Regards,

MTB
