Adjustment of the Chain

Recommended Posts

I find while checking the tension of my chain that the free play is quite different when checked on a workstand compared to when the bike is sitting on its wheels. Any one know how the 1.2" or 30mm freeplay is measured? The operators manual doesn't specify.

Page 52,under DRIVE CHAIN of the owner's manual say's to raise the bike off the ground with workstand . My expierience is the chain does tighten as the suspension compresses so lifting it off the ground is the only way to get an accurate adjustment.

Actually it's tightest on the stand. Look at it next time you have it on the stand, the bottom roller pushes up on the chain making it tighter.

I adjust mine to about 1" of freeplay on the stand.

Make sure you spin the wheel and set it at the tightest spot in the chain.

The manual does specify that the bike be on a stand to check the side plate wear of the chain. I guess the part describing the adjustment is a continuation of checking the side plate wear. I interpret this to mean 1.2" freeplay while on a work stand. With weight on the bike and the swingarm parallel to the ground, the freeplay does increase a lot.
