checking oil level

Recommended Posts

Yeah, I can hear it now, what a newby question this is!!!! Just wondering, when checking the oil level, do you screw the dipstick in or just rest it on the threads. There are bikes that do both.

Owners manual says "remove cap w/stick, wipe oil off, re-insert dipstick w/ cap to the threads touch the frame opening, remove stick & check level, do not screw the cap in" straight from the manual.

Unless of course the manual is wrong. The above works for me & I am on my 2nd DRZ.

I check w/o screwing. The diff isn't that much. If you're below half either way, why not top up on general principles? IMO, more important is to make sure the bike's off sidestand (upright) and not on hill.

The owners manual says NOT to screw the dip stick back in to get your reading, whereas the service manual says to screw it in...or atleast implies that. You gotta love the inconsistency!
