XR70 Flywheel removal problem to add some lighting.....

Recommended Posts

I was working on sons xr70 to add some lighting to it. Used a puller after removing the center nut but no avail. Also tried using heat no effect on loosening it. Any special tolls? I've done same process before to his old xr50 and I don't remember doing it that difficult. I'm worried I could damage the center shaft cuz it was a little difficult to put back the nut after giving up.

I have had pretty good luck with stuck flywheels. I install the puller, tighten it "just right", and give the center of the puller a "just right" clean hit with a 3lb hammer. If it doesnt pop off, add a little more torque to the puller and hit again.

That "just right" is best discovered gradually. You arent looking to yank the flywheel off with immense torque on the puller, and you arent trying to drive the crank out of the flywheel with the hammer. The point is to set up the proper amount of tension, so that the proper amount of inertia/vibration will break the pressed fit. Work slowly!

Oh GOD no do not use a impact to put the nut back on, as its likely youll never get the flywheel back off. What you need is a flywheel puller http://www.dratv.com/flywheelpuller.html and it should come right off, provided you havnt already damaged anything or messed up anything by using heat. And here is a good article and description me and my friend rode about putting lights on his xr70 and listed are the parts needed and the website links to get them from.

Get ready for a thread revival!!!

if you’re still around did you buy the stator or rewind it yourself ?

You could try to replace original with this..

As a rule, you cannot mix-n-match stators and flywheels, they are not compatible. You can't use a Chinese stator with a Honda flywheel, and, vice versa, you can't use a Honda stator with a Chinese flywheel.
