KLR 650 Engine Stop and Go

Recommended Posts

I have a California Version 2001 KLR 650 with 2,000 mostly highway miles. Before today, trouble free. After going about fourty miles and climbing about 2,500' (from 4,000' to 6,500'), engine quit. Let it cool down for 5-10 minutes would start and go for about 3 miles of climbing and would do same. Two up with combined rider and passenger weight of 280 lbs. Riding at 55-65 MPH. Temp guage mid range. Turned around went back to 4,000' and ran fine for remaining 40 miles home.

Have had similiar rides climbing to 8,000' elevations without problems.

What might be the problem?

Just a wild guess and probably wrong but ...

Is your tank vent partially blocked off creating a suction inside of your tank? If so, this takes a while to create enough vaccuume to build up to stop the gas flow & atmospheric pressure might enhance the effect?? I have seen it happen where the seat smashes the vent line. If it happens again open your tank lid & see if it starts right away.
