Thoughts on Moderating the Thumpette forum...

Recommended Posts

I read the Thumpettes (and others) asking for the recent ‘G-Spot’ post to be deleted or moved, and have moved it to the OT forum. (Actually, I moved Logans post, another Mod moved the original posted by 2BB). As this is the first decision of this type I’ve had to make, I thought I’d give you my reasoning.

The threshold issue is, does this post offend the three basic rules of Thumpertalk? These rules are 1. No spam/commercial postings, 2. No personal attacks, 3. No profanity. Obviously this is not spam. No one is personally being singled out here, in fact it was asking for a general ‘what do you think?’ And, while some people may be uncomfortable with the subject matter, there was no slang or profanity used, but used words commonly accepted in the medical community and society to describe physical characteristics or attributes.

Next issue, does the post violate the rules of the Thumpette Forum? The two rules of the Thumpette forum are: 1. Not used as a pick up joint, and 2. Treat the ladies of riding with respect.

This post obviously is unlikely to ‘make friends’, as Bob put it, so cannot be considered an ‘pick-up’. That leaves, is it disrespectful?

I look at this previous post as the BOTTOM baseline for respectability on the Thumpette forum. thread This post was allowed to stay, therefore was not considered ‘disrespectful’ by the moderators at that time. (I agree, as while it was perhaps in bad taste, the post was not an attack or crude joke, and could even be justified as true curiosity.) As a moderators position is to enforce the rules already in place, not create new ones, the ‘G-spot’ post asking for general female opinions is much less personal than that previous post asking a direct question that was allowed to remain in the forum. Therefore, it is hard to justify deleting it on those grounds.

The final issue is, does this subject matter belong in the Thumpette forum, or does it belong in OT? The fact is, a small but significant portion of what has thus far posted in the Thumpette forum has been only loosely related to the forum objectives of “This is the place for the women of our sport to hang out, talk, and meet other women that ride.” However, I do not believe that was meant to be inclusive (thus excluding other uses of the forum), so as to only allow women to post in the Thumpette forum, etc. And the prior posting that have been allowed and cheerfully commented on by the Thumpettes (remember the run of ‘why can’t I meet women’, etc, threads?) have been allowed to stay and not moved to the OT forum.

I’m looking at this very much from a stare decisis viewpoint, ie, I’m looking at past Mod decisions to make my own. Any changes in the standards used to evaluate posts will have to come from ‘above’, as legislation from the powers that be!

I do believe I have a little leeway, however, as I know Bryan wanted a female perspective in here, as we look at things a little differently than the guys!

Therefore, I feel a sliding scale relating to the potential offensiveness of the post and the relatedness to the objective of the forum is appropriate. In other words, if the post relates to riding but may be considered offensive by some, it is more likely to remain on the Thumpette forum than, say, a post many may find offensive but is completely unrelated to the major objective of the forum. In that case, it will likely be delegated to the OT forum (as is the case here, with the G-spot posts). Conversely, a post along the lines of the ‘dating advice’ posts, while not related to women riding, are unlikely to offend anyone, and thus may remain on the Thumpette forum.

I will also check the results of the recent poll I posted in the Thumpette forum, and take that into consideration when reviewing borderline posts. (And, as always, the final decision makers are the Bs, of course!)

And finally, a brief note to the many TT rs that are looking to the Thumpette forum as a safe place for their children. Certainly we will do our best to keep the posts unrelated to riding that may be considered offensive regulated to the OT forum. However, that will not necessarily mean keeping the Thumpette forum “PG13". It would be nearly impossible to do so and require 24 hour moderation (and even I’m not on here THAT much!) Please understand that TT cannot be responsible for what your children may read on a public forum.

Whew! Ok, now that you know where I am coming from... carry on!

Have you seen the commercial on TV these days with the attorney marrying the blond? The attorney groom stops short of saying I do, turning to an aside giving the attendees and viewers a lecture on the whys, whereases and wherefores of the I do forward looking statement.

the best man steps in and says I do.

my point is it's gonna be a judgement call everytime. We don't need a lot of analysis, although it was interesting reading till I fell asleep half way down.

WE TRUST YOU...(well I trust you, knowing I'm a male lurker who enjoys reading and stepping in here once in a while). Make the call kid and move on. Like someone said: I know pornography when I see it.

or like the old joke about the attorney and engineer....... the attorney never makes it across the room, but the engineer gets the job done......... actually its a joke about a physicist and an engineer, but still applies here.

We Trust your judgement.... You da man L2F..... even though you're a groupie.

  Its ok, I was TOTALLY 'playing judge' when I wrote this... Bryan & Brian wrote the 'rules/laws' and I was trying to determine what they meant, and wanted to happen... judicial interpretation!

I suppose i could just ASK them, but I have a feeling I'd get an answer like Bob's... "just get it done, L2Fly!"

Yeah, I'm a strange one, I don't dispute that! :lol::cry:

Remember this in your quest as a moderator L2F:

King of Swamp Castle : One day, lad, all this will be yours.

Prince Herbert : What, the curtains?

King of Swamp Castle : No, not the curtains, lad, all that you can see stretched out over the valleys and the hills! That'll be your kingdom, lad.

You might have to do battle with a few fierce Knights along the way too! Stand your ground, and you will gain those needed to find your Holy Grail!
