Dualsport XR400 tire sugestions (fire roads, dirt trails, 5 % highway)

Recommended Posts

The XR400 needs some legal tires, I want to eliminate any potential tickets.

I need a back tire for sure, and I should get a front too, although the front is not too bad

What do you all recomend?

It'll see 90 % dirt/gravel and limited highway

the WR400/444 will be used for the strict offroad only, ie ORV jaunts.

I'm thinking dunlop D606, maxxis DualMaxx, Pirelli MT21, Kenda. Trackmaster cheap!, Michelin EnduroStar (spendy!)

not really sure about front at this point

sugestions? kenda trackmaster II front & rear? they sure are cheap

I was a little leary of a tire as agressive as the kenda on highway/gravel roads though, the front looks like a mud tire

bike currently has the following

D739FA 80/100 - 21 in front

D756 110/100-18 in the back

stick with those sizes? Bike is made for bottom end, 440 kit, pumper carb, it's fun to lug it

I use DOT tires and ride 99% dirt too. My choice is D606 rear and MT-18HD front. Both are DOT. The MT-21 wore great, but didn't grip very well. The K-760s grip very well, but chunk quickly in rocky terrain and didn't last for my type of riding.

Our dirt is sandy clay, hardpack when dry, slick & sticky when wet

I'll be doing gravel road riding though, that'll probably chunk the tire fast

I like the mt21 when riding mostly dirt. It wears fast on pavement. The 606 is ok in dirt, great on street and long lasting. I found the Michelin Baja to be as good as the mt21 in the dirt and longer lasting on the street. Michelin Baja is my choice. Tires are a very personal part of the bike so opinions are widely varied.

Somebody talk me out of these kenda's, 57 $ for front & rear!

the bike will see very very little pavement, I haul it to the trails

it will see gravel though, wear is not a concern, but washing out the front end is

MT18 front, Kenda Trakmaster II 760 rear.

I liked the MT21 set better than the stock Dulop 490/695 combo.

Search here and rec.motorcycles.dirt

The TM rear gets good reviews.

The TM front gets horrible reviews.

Spend a little extra money on the front.

I just put trackmaster II on the front and back last week. Just did 300 miles this weekend all mixed type of conditions. I liked it much better than the dunslops that came with the bike. They held up great and had good traction. For the price I dont think you can go wrong. They are also DOT approved.

Why is the trackmaster II not liked on the front, washout issue?

It looks like a soft terrain tire, which is what I want for offroad, but I bet it wont work well on gravel
