XR80 Timing Chain

Recommended Posts

Can any one tell me if I can replace the timing chain on my boys '96 XR80 with out splitting the cases?

Thanks

After you take off the flywheel and stator (which should still be connected to the backing plate). Get a piece of welding rod or a hanger, with a pair of needle nose pliers curl the end. Then push it down the top part where the cam is, down toward the crank. Latch it onto the chain and it pulls right up. Hope this makes sense.

Doesn't the XR80 have the crank seal as part of the cases (not like the 100 where it is part of the stator mounting plate).

The only way you can change the cam chain is with a cam chain that uses a master link.

You'll have to cut the stock one to get it out.

Yeah, it's not like the XR100, but I think you can just pull off the seal and put a new one back in. You just need a pipe to go over the crank and a big washer so it pounds in evenly.
