My new '05 has a chunka-chunka sound....is this normal?

Recommended Posts

After break-in and getting the pilot circuit adjusted to a reasonable setting, I was able to idle the beast down to the recommended 1700 RPM. When I idle it down, it idles strong, but makes a chunka, chunka, sound, kinda like a knock - knock - knock sound!? It sounds almost like a worn crank bearing, or a bad piston slap. I know this can't be the case, 'cause its brand new. Please tell me that this noise is normal at a slow idle on these bikes...

Thanks guys. I figured that the noise was normal, I just wanted to be sure. I know this sound is not the valves. But, I will be checking them out of curiosity this weekend anyway.

That sound is very normal. Some people will try to scare you with the valve talk. Just check them now and then.

I have had a CRF450R every year since 2002 (I now have an 2005)and have run the &*%# out of them and never had a valve problem. I do maintain them very well.

They do make a lot of noise at idle.

Great Bike! Enjoy it!
