Oh no! Crank stripped? HELP!!!!!

Recommended Posts

2004 YZ250F, woodruff key sheared, the flywheel retaining nut backed off and must have been chewing on the end of the crank! When I tried to put the nut back on, it's cross treaded! The threads on the end of the crank don't look too bad...it looks recoverable, but I'm no machinist...what can I do? Please help...I have that sick feeling in my stomach!!!!!

crank/rod kits are only like $125 so it's not a huge money thing. But like you suggested you arent, a machinist would be your best hope for a repair.

Go to a hardware store and get a thread file.

They can often restore threads that arn't to bad.

what is a thread file? does something exist like a pipe cutter that can be used? i'd really like to find something that can attach to the section where the threads are good and back it out just like a nut...

You could try a "thread restorer". Not realy a tap, but it helps to recut rounded off threads and clean things up. That would be my first approach.
