Bark Buster question

I was looking through a dirt rider last night and i noticed shane watts and other gncc rider had duck tape on the top and bottom of their hand shields. My question is why do they have the duck tape on there?

The duct tape was probably meant as extensions for the plastic brush guards. Was the race really muddy and/or the weather cold?

I've done that when there is lot's of mud and large river crossings. I like to keep my hands dry. I'll have to try those MSR elephant ears sometime. They look ?
