Which 400?

Without details on you, your ability and where/how you plan to ride it is hard to reply. Fill us in first.

1) Height/weight

2) Riding ability

3) Any MX, racing?

4) Mechanically inclined, or prefer wash and ride.

5) Desert, woods, rocks, fireroads, singletrack......what kind of riding?

6) Budget?

There are a LOT of excellent 400 class bikes out there.

You might consider a Suzuki DRZ-400E for starters. It is a reliable and comfortable trail bike, but it is quite heavy. The electric start is nice. At your height you should consider raising the handlebars.

If you want something lighter, you could go for a CRF450 or WR450, but that will require more maintenance and cost more.

If you want something simpler, there is the old faithful XR400.

Sounds like there is a DRZ or an XR4 in your future. My bias is to always buy used because these bikes are very reliable and you can invest the savings in mods and safety gear. I don't want to start a flame war, but if you're leaning towards a crf250x, I'd spend some time reading the posts in that forum. There are valve issues with the bike. I'm not trying to be critical, just realistic. The crf250x was likely to be my next bike, but I am going to wait and see if they can revolve the valve issues in the 05 or 06 bikes.
