Hey Rick,

Yes I have ridden Cow Mountain several times. It has some really good trails. I would imagine this weekend will be the best riding of the year due to the rains. Another place to check out is Middle Creek. It is on the other side of Stonyford. It actually connects via corridor roads. Middle Creek is awesome riding. If you need anymore info let me know, I can shoot over some links.

Knoxville is probably the most neglected and under used OHV in NCAL. I don't know anyone that has ridden it or talks about it much. It is probably in dire need for a Motorcycle club to help with trail maintenance and the like. I have heard it referred as "Rocksville" not that I don't like rocks but the drive is brutal lake road to get there. Probably would take longer to get to then Stony because of the slow speed travel. If you go, take some pics so we can see what its like. And yes you can legally ride there

Hey rickmiester,

We're gonna hit Cow mtn. Sat, weather permitting. They close Cow for a couple of days after a good rain. Here's the info & number to call. They update their closure message every morning at around 7:30. I usually call the night before & in the morning just before we leave.

We'll be leaving Crockett at 7:30 am if their open, you game?

Rick,

Cow is okay but Middle Creek is much better. Middle Creek is a lot bigger too. We usually pass on Cow Mountain even though it's closer cause the trails are better at MC.

sounds like its alot bigger than stonyford and they are connected by rideable dirt roads looking at the maps anyway, but you guys are pretty close to ukiah anyway why not go the extra mile , [@#$%&*!] its 180 miles to stonyford i wonder how far it is to middle creek i will be checking it out for sure how is the camping at both places, does it have assigned camping or can you camp anywhere, i have another spot i go to in the sierras off of highway four above a town called arnold a place called boards crossing you can ride from highway 4 to 108 all on dirt roads have been going out there four 20 years or so it a game refuge and its owned by sierra pacific industries now and its private but nobody ever bothers you and dosent cost anything but its in the snow zone pretty soon, there are so many places that we dont know about in cal that is what im trying to find.

rickmiester,

I also ride outta Board's crossing, the town's called Dorrington. Our cabin is just to the left of the hotel. We've logged over 1.5k miles in that area over the last 2 years.

As to your question about Cow mtn vs, stony, same terrain, far less people at cow, and yes, there's camping.

After the snow hits the Stanuslaus ( Boards crossing ) area, we spend the rest of the winter riding Cow & similar spots. Nasty places in the summer, but makes for great winter riding.

You ever been to the Lube room?

You can ride between MC & Stonyford but you better have a lot of gas!

MC has @ 20-25 camping sites. It's something like $4 or $8 a night. There is a very small open area which is great for kids & beginners but there aren't really any beginner trails that lead up to the rest of the trail system. You'll also need to cross the creek a couple of times from MC to the upper trails which can be a little exciting after a heavy rain. Another option is to drive up the hill and camp at Penny Pines (no water) for free. There are beginner trails that can be accessed from Penny Pines. You'll see some other campgrounds on the map but I've never stayed at those, just rode by them.

MC is smaller than Stonyford. IIRC Stony is @ 90K acres, MC is @ 60K, and Cow is 23K.

I don't consider the terrain at Cow to be the same as MC. Although they both have woods and rocks, MC is much more wooded and Cow is somewhat rockier. MC is higher than Cow and sometimes gets snow.

If you’re coming up I5, SF is much closer that MC and Cow is even farther. Hwy 29 hits 20 between SF and MC. From hwy 101, Cow is closest then MC.

ah yes beaver creek ,go out to that area about 6 times a year i like it out by the far bridge by the old logging camp with the 5 hole [@#$%&*!], i like it out there and for the cows theres nothing like flying around a corner and seeing what at first looks like a bear and then figureing out its a cow scared to death trying to plow you down, lots of fun. 250thumper i will be out at carnegie on sunday i will look for your truck ill be there before 9am or so as for club moto i live right next to it only watch them ride i dont motocross i get hurt to much but i like to climb hills though, have watched the care flight come about every other month to pick someone up at the club , ive never heard of the poker run by clear lake whats that about.
