satellite phone

anybody have one of these?

we ride beyond cell range often on remote single tracks. one of these could be a lifesaver.

they are down to about 13 ounces and cost about 650 for the phone and 30 a month for basic service.

Had one at work for backup communications in case of disaster . Tested it weekly . It was/is expensive and only as good as the ground stations you access through . Was advised to sell it....couldn't find a buyer .

I own a few of them and they're great (Globalstar type).

You can get an in-car base unit too that's nice (about $700).

It would be nice to have cell coverage everywhere you ride but that's not possible if you ride off-road. Shoot, I live 10 minutes from the local Mall and don't have cell coverage at my house.

we rent one from globalstar when we do a remote raft trip. they need to see the satalite or they wont work. just like a gps. they wont work in your house unless you have a remote antenna.
