1987 XR200 shifter q?

got me my 1st 4 stroke dirtbike, anyway i notice the shifter slided in an out some, about 1/4-3/8 in of play. any ideas what would make it do that, i never seen anything do that befor, this is my 20 somthing+ bike.

I don't know if anyone will have an answer, but an owners manual or a talk with a Honda mech would be where I'd start. I have an 86 XR200 and a Haynes manual. I'll grab it and take a look for a part that might be worn or broken, which is apparent by what's happening on your bike.

Try posting in the Honda XR's section too. Your bikes old, but they made that same bike up until a couple of years ago.

thanks, i got the bike to do a MX conversion this is the only thing i saw thats wrong with it.

Looking at the microfiche of your bike on Powersportspro, it looks as though there is a spring and circlip on the end of your shift shaft, on the clutch side. If the spring is missing, it is allowing the shift shaft to slide the way it does.
