The best way would be to take the forks off the bike...pop off the caps, take out the springs and compress the forks. Measure from the top to the oil.

You don't have to take the forks off to measure the level. Take the handlebars off first. Then loosen the top triple clamp bolts. Next loosen the fork caps. Once loose then grab the rear wheel and lift and bottom the forks. Then you will be able to take the caps off, the springs out and check the level.

doc,

Good suggestion. I stumbled on this a couple of weeks ago. If I put the XR4 on my bike stand, remove the fork caps, and lift the rear tire till the front bottoms, the forks end up basically vertical. Perfect for checking oil levels. If I place it properly on the stand, the entire bike would balance with the forks compressed. Great trick, just make sure you have someone to steady it if things go wrong........... or tie a strap to the ceiling........... or remove the forks...... or something.
