XR250 Exhaust Valve Guides, fitment?

Recommended Posts

Hey guys, I just rebuilt my 01 XR250 and I have a bad smoking problem. I bought the bike in a body bag, and the last thing the owner said was that it started smoking before it locked up. I rebuilt the engine but it was still smoking. I took the head apart and the exhaust valve guides are loose in the head. I can move them about .020" in and out and they spin freely. The intake guides are solid.

It looks like I have found my source for the oil, what do you guys think?

thanks

Joe

What do you mean you can move the exhaust valve IN AND OUT 0.020? Do you mean sideways, you know, are the guides flogged out?

If they do have 20 thou clearance in the giude, yes they are majorly flogged out! It should have 1 or 2 thou max!

And yes if that is the case, I think you have found your oil problem.

How exactly did you come to the conclusion that it had .020 clearance?

With the valves removed, the actual guides pressed into the head are moving. I can spin them freely and they move in and out about .020".

OH RITE! Now I understand!

Yes well its stuffed if the valve guide are loose in the head! You better track down a second hand head.

And yes that most likely definatly was your oil problem!
