Fork oil

What exactly is fork oil? Is it some kind of gear lube or is it just made for forks? What weight is it?

This has been covered in depth in other forums. It it kind of a lengthy explination. Check the xr250/400 forum and there are some good articles. Basically fork oil is a specific oil that is NOT any other kind of oil. It actually cannot be compared to motor oil as far as weight, but for standardization reasons the powers that be gave it an SAE weight. Standard is 5 wt. You can get 2.5 wt and even up to 10 wt. This along with how much oil you put in makes the suspension harder or softer. An xr50 does not have fork oil, all other XR's do.
