Valve tappet adjustment

Recommended Posts

OK, need a little help from an experienced DRZ mech.

Valve tappet clearance on the intake is specified at .004"-.008". Exhaust is .008"-.011".

Mine measure in at...

.004 left side intake, .0035 cam chain side

.009 left side exhaus .007 chain side..

Sooooo.... the cam chain side on both I and E are a little tight. Should I worry about this and remove shims? What wouldcause this?

Thanks 😢

i would loosen both intakes and the left exhuast.

several causes or contributors

crappy modern fuels

dirt ingestion

the inherent cam dynamics of modern high revving four strokes.

make the needed shim changes and monitor frequently from here on out.

if they tighten your going to need a valve job.

this exact reason is why they need to be checked and recorded early in the bikes life.we have no way of knowing how much they have moved.maybe alot, maybe just a little.hard to say with out initial reference measurements.

it needs attention now regardless.

Ok Burned , thanks

When I loosen both intakes, should I loosen them with the same size shim and just get them into the tolerance area? Seeing that they are off .0005 to each other, or should I try to shim them so that they are both in the tolerance area with an egual measurment.

Did you mean to loosen the right exhaust?.

The left one is in the tolerance zone (.0079-.0118) and I have .008, the right one is .006 . ( sitting on the bike.)

Also, the manual lists shim sizes in .05 mm, but my exausts are 3.08mm??

Thanks 😢

yes,sorry i meant right ex.

the bikes come with some half sizes that are only factory sizies from suzuki.

do you have the cams out?

if so give me all of the shim sizes in relation to position.

Both intakes are 280

Both exausts are 308

When I was doing the checking withthe feeler gauge, I could not believe that the tolerances would be different between the two I and the 2 E as I described. Soo I checked this gap 5x to make sure, so I am sure of my measurements.

ok,cool.the differing measurements is common.

right intake has a 280 with .0035" clearance.install a 275.that takes the clearance to .0055".

left intake has a 280 with .004" clearance.install a 275 for .006" clearance.

right ex has a 308 with .009" clearance.install a 305 for .010" clearance.

left ex has a 308 with .007" clearance.install a 300 for .010" clearance.

hope that helps. 😢

No WAY ! those are the same readings i had when i checked mine last weekend! (05-S w/350 miles)I did set them to burned's rec. spec.'s and it runs fine<but i rode home from a friend's house(after riding all morning)without my ear plugs and wow, it was pretty noisy. So bad that last night i pulled the valve cover back off and rechecked them.Still at what i set them at.I did pull the air box snorkle, could that increase the noise level that much? And on the auto tensioner, you basically just install the cams then the tens.then the sring ? Sorry for going on but i want to make sure i'm not hurting my new baby!

BTW ,did i read the torque spec. for the cam caps @7-9 ft.# ? 😢
