timing chain

Hey I am new to dirtbikes and 4 stroke engines. First oof I am thinking about buying a 1987 xr80. The guy said it needs a timing chain put on.IS this har on a scale from 1-10??

also how can I put it on I dont want to take it do a shop i want to do it myself so I can learn about 4 stokes. thanks

with the XR80 you need to split the cases so yes it is difficult unless you get one with a master link then you won't need to.

Also if it needs a timing chain it will probably need a few more things so be ready for that.

Phil,

It's been a while (years) for the XR80, but can't you pull the seal off then put the chain in, then put a new seal back in?

I had a look and I think the seal is way to small.

The opening on the 100 is big enough to do it but I don't think it can be done on the 80 (the hole is half the size)but I never did try it so I could be wronge.
