Do it yourself drain plug magnetizing?

Recommended Posts

I read an article a while ago that told me how to magnetize my oil drain plug. I don't remember the whole process. I tried it with my battery charger but i don't think i did it right. Anyone know where i can find the article at? 😢

I'm sure there are ways to turn any chunk of steel into a magnet.

If you find better instructions, please post it.

A ferromagnetic material can be magnetised by (i) placing it in a magnetic field or (ii) by repeatedly stroking it in the same direction with the same pole of a permanent magnet or (iii) by placing it in the centre of a coil (or solenoid) carrying an electric current to give an electromagnet. When magnetised some materials retain the magnetism they are said to be hard ferromagnets because of the remanent magnetism and are used to make permanent magnets. Other materials, e.g., pure iron, do not retain magnetism when removed from magnetic influence are said to be soft ferromagnets which are non-remanent.
