1st time changing YZ250F tire, need advise...

I just ordered some tires and should recieve them by Friday. I was going to take my bike to a local shop and have them pulled off and change the tires and put them back on for $40. Not a bad price, I assume.

I think I want to learn to do it myself.

What tools should I use?

Any other tips would be great...

$40 to remove the wheels and mount new tires? Go for it, thats cheap.

it's a little work, nothing bad.

get at least two, if not three BIG tire irons. the enduro ones made for your fanny pack are cute but they just make it harder. i use ty davis's "tyre irons" and they work great.

i would suggest that you *not* use soapy water when mounting the new tire. although many swear by it, i have seen that the trapped moisture causes corrosion of the spoke nipples. so now i just use baby powder, it works for me and doesn't trap moisture inside the tire carcass.

Funny, you mentioned that because I almost bought some fanny pak 9.5 inch tire irons off of ebay today. Like $12.99 for 3. I think I will pay for it to be done the first time and watch. Then do it myself next time.

Where do I locate Ty Davis tire irons for a good price? How many, tire irons do you use?

2 is an absolute minimum, 3 is a practical minimum, 4 is much better.

Baby powder, or just generic talcum powder, is also excellent in that it will allow the tube to slip around and center itself up after you put it back together. Dust the tube and the tire interior with it. It will help.

$40 will just about buy the irons. Get 3 or 4 of those nice red handled irons (Moose sells them, too). Read the threads listed and figure it out. Basically, if you stuff all four in the tire before you begin removing, life is MUCH easier. Also, put the tube in the tire and insert the valve stem into the rim BEFORE you begin tire installation.

With a little practice, you can change a pair of tires in 30-45 minutes. Pretty easy work for $40.

I *do* use soapy water, btw. Baby powder doesn't do much to help the bead mount up. The nipples corrode from the yucky crap we ride in throughout the summer. Soap is generally not corrosive. If you want to prevent spoke corrosion, you need to get energetic, remove the nipples one at a time, and grease the threads up.

Anyways, there is going to come a day when YOU will have to change the tires by yourself and you don't want to be staggering around looking for someone to help. You are not going to impress the babes by begging for help when your race is about to start.

If you do it you're self I suggest buying 1 or 2 extra tubes. the first time you do it you will pinch the tube if you don't have an extra one. probably Murphy's law

I agree with these guys. Spend the $40 on a good set of tire Irons and learn a new skill that will save you money and time in the future. Especially when you start swapping tires every month or two in preporation for races and rides. Changing tires is just one more step in properly maintaining and preping your bike. Not only will you get your tires changed but you'll learn to adjust and inspect your chain and sprockets, inspect your wheel bearings, and tighten your spokes. Proper maintenance is as important as riding skills. I'm faster than Ricky Charmichael on a busted Bike.

Oh yeah, heavy tubes and lots of WD-40. WD-40 to help get the tire off and on and thick tubes help against pinching with tire irons and on the trail.

Thats a ripoff. I go to cycle gear and can get them done for 12 a piece.

I never heard of cycle gear...

Save your money and alot of pain, get the shop to do the tyres for you. $40 sounds a bit steep I pay $10 a tyre and that is in Australian dollars.

I have tried all the advice that is available and I don't care what anyone says they are a pain in the a#$ to remove, just ask your tyre shop and these guys do them all the time and have all the right gear.

Just my 2 cents worth. Will be interested to here what your experience was like if you go ahead and do it yourself.

Well, I have 4. Two of them are the really cheap short ones, and two of them are the longer mid-priced ones (maybe motion pro or something?). I find myself mostly using the two longer ones, and occasionally one of the short ones. Don't know if I've ever needed the 4th one. And I agree, there is a big difference in the two types that I have...........I don't recommend the short cheap ones. My longer ones that came as a pair work great though. If the fancy orange handled ones work even better, I'm sure they are worth the extra $.

Before I got the tire tools, I had used screwdrivers in a desperate moment, and swore I'd NEVER 😢 EVER change a tire myself again (good thing my neighbors are deaf!🤣). However, when I found out that my dealer charged like $25/tire 😢 , I decided maybe I'd buy some tire tools and give it a shot one more time. Had I realized how easy it was and that I'd continue to do it, I'd probably have bought the nicer ones originally! Oh, and a tip that I read on here (or somewhere 😢 ) was to use a bucket for a working surface............I have a pool chemical bucket that is a bit larger than a 5 gal bucket that works great (the sprocket can be placed down so that you aren't grinding it into god knows what, or even worse, smashing your knuckles against it).

Oh yeah, one more thing that helps.........warm tires are easier to work with. I lay mine in the sun while I am getting stuff ready and it seems to help.

There is a slight learning curve, but once you do a couple, you'll never pay any amount for someone else to do it for you.....unless, of course you have a lot more money than I do...........well, actually, you probably do, but as others have mentioned, there will come times that there won't be anyone else available to do it for you (Sundays, late nights, at the track, etc.).

One more bit of advice. Wear on old set of ridding gloves to keep from tearing some skin off on the sprocket or disc. Plus your hands wont be so dirty afterwards. Let us know how it goes. You should feel pride and acomplishment once you work on your own equipment and you know that it is done right.
