Shims Online?

Recommended Posts

Does anyone know where I can get shims online? I am tired of walking into my dealer and getting the shaft from those clowns 😢

If you look at that kit, those shims fit a wide variety of bikes , any of those shops would probably swap shims. (service department/not the parts department). The mechanics have access to all kinds of shims, the parts guys don't have access to. In many cases the parts guys are really there just to aggrevate you.

That kit looks really nice , But I wouldn't get alot of use out of it for a 1 or 2 adjustments. But if somebody would give me one for Christmas I wouldn't complain. >G<

1: Many shops will not swap,,, I've tried three local ones,, and no luck.. But your right in,,, some will.. Hit and miss.

2: Yes,, the average rider will not use the Hot Cams shim get to full potential... BUT.. What is your down time and aggravation worth? For me the $70 buy in,, for even one use was worth it,, Knowing that all the parts I needed were sitting on my spares shelfs,, For the initial adjustments, then later the HC cam swap adjustments,, and any future ones I need to do. Add in,, I have at least two local DRZ guys to me,, and I'm more then willing to swap shims with them......and it's very easy to justify the buy in cost.

I'm willing to bet there's a few in my locale that may not either, I got my swaps from a very large Dealer carring multiple bike lines, they didn't mind at all for swapping shim under bucket types. The smaller places may not like to swap , I don't know. But in that case I'd probably get a kit also like you. But the guy had to know it might save him some bucks, if he has access.

Got ya,, and good plan as long as your willing to spend the time looking/swapping 😢

For me (many/some 😢 ) even if local shops would swap shims.. I'd still get the kit (It was not available when I first got my DRZ, thus why I tried to get shops to swap) reaching over to my shelves to get the right shim,, is worth the $70 to me.. vs getting in the truck, driving to a shop, spending time at the service department, trying to find the right shim...

If ya have the time to spare,, give it a shot.. Alls they can say is no 😢

But if your time is limited,, or you work on bikes at night after shops close, or just like to not waste time looking for parts, that can be on hand for just a few $$ consider the kit. It's not for every one 😢

Try them for what??? A complete shim kit?

And if so why would I spend $65.95 plus shipping with that company when I can spend just $4.00 more and support TT and a TT sponsor

I'm in the same boat you are. My bike is sitting there in pieces while I look for shims. I just called 3 local shops. 2 will exchange shims and 1 won't. But even the 2 that will exchange them want money. About half the price of new ones. I guess it's better than nothing.

Here's a thought, why don't we ask our moderators to post a Thumpertalk shim swap site for wrench monkeys like us. We can exchange (or buy) shims from our fellow thumpers...
