BWB63 Posted December 14, 2004 Here is some info on Mike Kay! http://www.race.borynack.com/ What a few others have said, on other groups. From: "Russell Scott" My only words of advice for Mike. If KTM invites you to their refreshment tent, tell them thanks but no thanks. Johnny Campbell was doing real well a couple of years ago in Dakar, until he got food poisoning. I heard KTM just hired the KGB to handle the food service for the non-KTM riders. 😢 R From: Pontiac_Sr Mike has already paid his ASO fees & other financial obligations to race the Dakar long ago, so he's fully commited financially. It's the first time he's raced the Dakar, but he's not new to racing. >From what I know, he's the kind of guy who does his homework and has a plan for racing the Dakar based on his own worldly racing experiences and the experiences of his friends who have previously raced Dakar, so he's not going at this completely blind. Mike may not be the fastest, but I know he's stubborn, very tough & won't give up unless his bike is beyond repair, but even then he may try to carry it to the finish ;-) I know this past summer, 'irondude' Mike has been practicing in the California deserts (trails, lots of dunes, rocks, mountains, etc) during the heat of summer (+110F temps) fully geared up with a jacket, pack, etc. He's a good candidate for this race and I wish him the best of luck in finishing and hope he surprises everyone with an incredible finish. BIGGITY Posted December 14, 2004 Good Luck Mike! You've got big cahonnes compadre!!! Go take that 680 Hondaberg (as you would call it) and show those KTM boys that a Honda can finish that race! 17 days... 😢 You da man! 😢

mikekay Posted December 15, 2004 Hey-- Thanks for the support and the advice! Just FYI- I invited KTM to dinner a few months ago, and they declined...hmmm. Hopefully Bruce and Annie will get some day by day accounts via sat phone of how its going and post them on the cool web page Bruce has so kindly set up... Of course-- Dakar.com will have results and more each day. I am #119. Big Black Pig. This is my first Dakar, so for sure i am just there to learn. I am not in the league of the Cyrils, Alfies, Andys and Carlos's. These guys are my heros...and just to be on the same starting line with them is an honor. To reach the rest day -- day 9 -- in the saharan oasis of Atar, Mauritania will be a dream come true....and to reach the Pink Lake at Dakar will be beyond what i am shooting for. Only 1/3rd will finish. First time out i dont think i will be in that group. I dont have a hotel room reserved in Dakar! IN 2006 i will race. But for now i am 100% tourist, just like my first Baja 1000, its enough to just be doing it. This Dakar Rallye deal is something i have thought about for decades. My first exposure was as a student living in Paris in the mid-eighties...seeing the bikes and the trucks for what was then a new race/adventure...Now--after 2 years of preparing, testing, training, and the 6 months of "entering" the Dakar...(the French email me yesterday letting me know i owed them another $3000...!) the end of the begining is about over and the begining of the real adventure will soon start. What a trip! This race is the third most followed sporting event in the world! Only the Olympics and the World Cup are more watched. Isnt that amazing? Sadly here in the states we havent caught the Dakar bug, yet. Maybe with KTMUSA and a growing number of US privateers things will change. Just as Lance Armstrong made the Tour de France mainstream in the USA, maybe the Dakar--that most amazing of races in that most amazing of sand boxes--will soon be known to many more sports fans in our great country. yer TT bro, Mike
KeithBoyd Posted December 15, 2004 From my short membership in this forum and from what i`ve read and researched i think Mike will finish quite well up in the standings......Good luck Mike....if you see an ex military hand painted green soft top Land Rover (with Irish number plates) make yourself known...i`m driving over for the prologue and start.....although on the 31st i`ll be in the BMW tent getting pished on cheap red wine...!!!......For a European dominated rally i always like to see the `Yanks` do well......!!! Dont forget the 5 "p`s" Prior Planning Prevents Piss Poor Performance.....you`ve done more than your fair share of planning so theres absolutley no reason why you should`nt perform..... When do you leave for Barcelona or are you en route??... Best wishes and kind regards..... keith boyd..........🤣😢😢😢😢😢🤣
KeithBoyd Posted December 15, 2004 That`ll be 6 p`s then...d`oh!!

mikekay Posted December 18, 2004 Mike Kay is an *******. Thats whats up, thought I'd let you know! I really like riding motorcycles. After 32 years of riding, its just as fun as ever. But to be honest--there is about 10-20 % of off roaders who i really cant stand being around. Its the group that rides with loud pipes on forest service roads, or drinks and makes noise all night at the campground the night before a big race. The yahoos who ruin it for the rest of us. I really cant stand those idiots. I wish they would move on to another sport--like quads or jet skis or something.... Frankly i am a bit embarrassed from time to time to be associated with our sport--just becouse of the public perception that off-roaders are lame, stupid, low lifes.. But my new friend Vinnie from Jersey--who evidently thinks i am both his enemy and an *******--he isnt one of that 10-20% that i am talking about. He is just to new to all this to have any clue what he is talking about. Hey Vinnie--muslim extremists are your enemy. Not guys who are concerned that Honda has under engineered the Unicam engines, like me. Bin Laden is an *******. Mike Kay is a passionate rider who was racing 4 stroke Hondas WAY WAY WAY before you where born. www.kay-offroad.com Vinnie--do yourself a BIG favor. When you grow up, move to California, change your name to Vincent or Vin or V or something: out here we ride all year long. We can do 20 hours of riding in a week, easy. I did a 100 mile run thru Saddleback mountain just this afternoon...Its fun here in the warm California sun. 😢
bluerock5 Posted December 18, 2004 Can you follow the race on TV or the Radio? Thanks

Mike Kay is a passionate rider who was racing 4 stroke Hondas WAY WAY WAY before you where born. www.kay-offroad.com Mike sir, I didn't realize I've been having a discussion with a really old old old decrepid gentleman until just now. I was always taught to be nice and respectful to the elderly. Yes sir, I will really be careful that what I say is filled with appreciation. You WWI vets deserve the honor. 😢 Mike have you designed a special strap to hold you on the bike when you do Dakar? Training wheels to keep your balance? Tooth picks to keep your eyes open? A Ibuprofen dispensor on the handlebars? Redneck coffee cup holder attached to the hand sheilds? Two pretty girls to help you lift your arthretic leg over the pig or just retractable chrome stairs? I wish you the best at Dakar, Sir. May you not have to take too many urinal stops. May Exlax relieve your constipations and sanicans be few. May the yahoos keeping you awake all night drown in their beer. If you turn your hearing aids down they might not wake you up the night before the race but then that would require that you remember how to turn your hearing aids down. Break a leg and bring it home to the USA. Best Wishes to a really really very very old man. 😢😢😢 From Old Man Time
BWB63 Posted December 18, 2004 I didn't think I was that old yet....I knew I decrepid and busted up but, know I am way old also??? Way to go Mike now I am done for! 😢 On the other hand if you being major old can race the Dakar then maybe I can still ride around town posing as a real bike rider? I was born in 1963 as a rich white child. I know you are not more then that.
