Engine skipping

I have a 2000 DRZ400E. After riding about 2 miles, the bike begins to start skipping. I have replaced the plug, had the carb gone through, drained gas in fuel tank, cleaned petcock, checked all electrical connections and grounds, checked valve clearance, and had coil tested for 15 minutes. I don't want to throw parts at it...that gets too expensive. Does anyone have any ideas on what the problem could be???

try to borrow a stator out of another drz.

Could he be hitting the rev limiter? ? Mine did that a couple weeks ago while in traffic. I went up a gear and it stopped.

it skips during acceleration, even before high rpm's.

any way to test cdi ?

not reliably.the best way is to test with a known good unit.

i was told there is a resistor in plug boot any one heard of a failure there?

I would run the test on the sending coil, sounds like it is shorting once it heats up.

where is that located? is it the same thing the plug boot is connected to?

The sending coil is built into the stator, you test it by using an ohm meter on the plug at the CDI box. Test each wire in the plug to ground, there should be no continuity, i.e. open circuit. Then test between the wires, 2 are for the sending coil and 2 for the pickup coil, they should show low resistance.

should i get the bike hot or not the problem only occurs after warm up? or will it appear right away if theres a problem? thanks for your help too!

I would test it after it starts having the problem.

Remove seat and test, should not cool down to much in that time.

Maybe don't put the seat bolts in, then the seat comes off quick.

You can also run the tests cold and note the values to compare.

I didnt know that the "E" had a rev limiter ?

So......I can ride it harder?? Here I thought I was giving it hell...I didnt even know it has a rev limiter, must not be giving it enough hell.
