Another dumb question from yours truly.

Recommended Posts

I just got a brand new xr80 for my son. This thing wont idle w/o the choke. I know it's cold and snowy and possible just a jetting issue. But are these things normally this cold blooded? It starts easy enough...but wont idle.

Any thoughts?

Most 4 strokes are jetted lean these days.

You could play with the airscrew or the fuel screw which ever the bike has.

If the screw is in front of the slide its a fuel screw, if its behind the slide its an air screw.

The fuel screw meters fuel so out is richer, the air screw out is leaner.

We have a '99 XR100, and it had these symptoms a while back after sitting for a few months. Pilot jet was blocked. Seeing as how your XR80 is an '03 model, it may have been sitting around in the crate, or on the showroom floor with some old fuel in the bowl for a while, and might have blocked one of the holes in the pilot? Worth a look anyway, even if only to check for crap in the fuel bowl.

If it was like our TTR125LE it comes jetted very lean right out of the box. Coupled with that it needs to be warmed up to run in warm weather. I would bump the pilot jet one size, adjust the fuel screw, and reset the idle. Then allow about 5 minutes warm up time. It's also supposed to hit 40 this weekend so that should help also.
