2004 XR400 basic setup

Recommended Posts

I have a new XR400 and have'nt rode it yet. Cold and snow here in Northeast.

I'm 225 and would like advice on basic setup front and rear.

I'd love details.

I do plan to get video and sag setter later.

Probably new spings etc from RT next year.

Just want to set for my weight best with factory adjustments to get started.

Thanks for any detailed explanations. For example how is sag adjusted?

Thank you,

Mark

Sag is adjusted by rear spring preload. The two rings on the shock above the spring are wound up the shock to increase sag (softer ride)and wound down the shock to decrease sag, i.e. stiffer ride = more preload = less sag.If you're not racing or jumping and want a nice comfy ride wind the rings up the shock a bit more (make sure they are locked together though)The recommended sag is 105mm ,this is 'race sag' though and may be a little harsh if you are an easy going rider.I'm around 220 lbs also and i think you'll find the forks on the soft side although this can be controlled to a degree by dialling in more damping.
