XR185 to 200cc

Recommended Posts

Does anyone know if you can turn a 1979 XR185 into a 200 by changing the cylinder, and piston, and will the 185 head work?

It will definately work.I've had An xr 200 for 8 years and for spare parts I collect 200 and 185 engines. They are the same cylinder. The 185 just has thicker walls. You can actually have the 185 cylinder bored to A 200 piston.I have done this several times. And yes the 185 head will work on A 200 cylinder.I think the only difference between the 2 engines is the tranny gear ratio and the bore size.If you want to go max wiseco sells A 12 to 1 piston listed for an atc 200 which is also the same engine.they don't sell one for An xr but they have one for the extinct 3 wheeler. If you use this piston you MUST use 104 octane or higher race fuel.If you don't you will have detonation and the top of the piston will melt.I found this out the hard way.
