Thinking of a helmet cam... suggestions anyone?

Recommended Posts

Ok, I'm buying myself a toy.. I figure, what the hell, I earned it. So it was between a new GPS to replace my busted one, or a helmet cam. :)

I desided on the helmet cam...sort of.. Now I'm not so sure. First off whos gonna watch the videos? since Squiddy's not on the scene anymore, I have no way to host a video. Plus, I'm not really sure how much usable footage I would actually get for something that I would even WANT to host.

Same with the GPS, while I used my old one alot im Florida, the trails are too well marked here for it to be of anyuse except in extreme emergencies when you need to get to the main roads.

I gues I'm just looking for some feed back and ideas. I really would like a helmet cam but I think I'm starting to talk myself outta it. Any thoughts?

This was my first ride with my helmet cam, and it's been the funnest footage to share here on TT and with all my friends and family. And those who don't ride really like it and can understand a little bit better about what we do out there and why we are addicts...... for what it's worth, I think it's one of the coolest things I've purchased. Now I have something to show for my rides and I don't have to stop and pull out a camera and try for a cool shot.

I'm about to jump as well. I never thought of hosting the video though - although we can at our club's website. Since our family all rides, it's more of a family album on dvd concept here.

I looked at a few of the systems out there - I like helmetcam.com - pretty robust hardware.

I just picked up a helmet cam setup myself and will be using it for the first time this weekend. I have two girls that ride, so it will be cool to get some video of them riding. I am sure, like all other gadgets, it will lose it's appeal at some point, but should be fun for now. I say go for it. You can always sell it on E-bay if you quit using it.

Where did Squidward go? I must have missed it if he left. :)

FYI..........IF you want to communicate with Squidy just go here.......

He's alive and doing well!! Just not here on this venue...........so go to the above listed venue and drop him a line.........of course you'll have to sign up on 'Myspace' to be able to communicate with Squidy. Not a big deal........numerous TT'ers are out there on Myspace. TT thread for Myspace profiles !! :)

I haven't looked at prices for ready made helmet cams but you should be able to find a small, basic camera on the internet that could be duct taped or velcroed to your helmet with the video being input to your 8mm or other small recorder. If you want to go all out there are some digital recorders out there based either on memory cards or hard drives that work incredibly well ($450+). Doing that I could see spending around $120 for a great Sony HAD camera and a mic as the audio could turn out to be extremely entertaining as well. I'm an electronic gearhead if you haven't guessed so if there's anything I can help with let me know. Now that I'm thinking, I might try it with my kids on the CRF50.

Good deal.

Bad news is the ZR 80 does not support LANC.

Canon ZR10 through ZR50 does, but they discontinued after the 50.

Lanc is the icing on the cake, allows you to remote stop/start your camera without digging it out of your pack.

Also you better look for a bigger battery for that Camcorder, the stock battery will give you about an hour of record time.
