Helmet testing: DOT vs Snell

Recommended Posts

What is the main difference between Snell and DOT?

IE: could a DOT helmet pass the Snell helmet tests?

Does a Snell helmet cost more just because it was submitted for testing?

:)

SNELL is a third party memorial foundation that tests helmets for safety. I will ONLY EVER wear a helmet that is Snell certified. DOT is government - and we all know how that can be....

DOT is Department Of Transportation. Officially certified to be a helmet.

I've seen some pretty lowly, low tech helmets with DOT stickers.

Snell Memorial Foundation is a testing agency that was created when an auto racer's helmet failed and he (Matt Snell) was killed in the crash. Snell helmets must pass a testing standard.

We get asked that a lot at the dealership where i work. DOT drops the helmet from 3 feet, Snell from 10.

And yes, a DOT helmet could easily pass SNELL and not be approved. The company has to pay for snell to test it, meaning the cost of the helmet would go up.
